SAN DIEGO – San Diego State’s Yasmine Kabbaj has garnered her second Mountain West Women's Tennis Player of the Week honors of the season, the conference announced on Wednesday. The senior from Fes, Morocco went undefeated in both singles and doubles in the week of March 30, helping lead the Aztecs to wins over Fresno State and San Jose State on the road.
The Scarlet and Black extended their winning streak to five matches, shutting out the Bulldogs 4-0 and handing the Spartans their first conference loss of the season in a 4-1 victory. The Aztecs are now 13-6 overall and 6-1 in the Mountain West.
Kabbaj continues to lead the team in doubles. Paired up with Ninon Martinache, the duo is 10-1 in the second spot. Last week, the two Aztecs cruised 6-1 over Fresno State’s Charlotte Gisclon/Paulina Montiel and San Jose State’s Duru Durgun/Olaya Bances.
Playing on the top court in singles competition, Kabbaj is 7-4 on the season and 4-1 in the league. The senior captured both her recent victories in straight sets, taking down Fresno State’s Matilde Magrini 6-4, 6-3 and San Jose State’s Cheuk Ying Shek 6-2, 6-1. Her win over Magrini clinched the match for the Aztecs.
The 2024 Mountain West Player of the Year looks to lead San Diego State to its second straight Mountain West Championship, which kicks off on April 23 in Las Vegas, Nev.
Next up, the Aztecs host Utah State and New Mexico on April 11 and 13. Both matches are set to get underway at noon.
