SAN JOSE, Calif. – San Diego State women’s tennis won its final regular season road match on Sunday, handing San Jose State its first conference loss of the season after taking the doubles point and earning victories on courts one, four and five in a 4-1 victory
The Aztecs improve to 13-6 overall and 6-1 in the Mountain West while the Spartans fall to 15-2 on the season and 6-1 in the league.
The Scarlet and Black captured the doubles point for the fourth consecutive match. Yasmine Kabbaj and Ninon Martinache cruised to a 6-1 win over Duru Durgun and Olaya Bances in the second spot. Liisa Varul and Jo-Yee Chan were then bested 6-3 by Cheuk Ying Shek and Carla Urchoeguia on the top court. Zoe Olmos and Gloria Alogo secured the point with a victory on court three, taking down Emma Fantousis and Soledad Fayos 6-4.
Martinache put the Aztecs ahead 2-0 after winning by retirement on court four. The junior was ahead 6-1, 4-0 over Bances when the match was abandoned.
Soledad Fayos put the Spartans on the board, taking court six 6-1, 6-1 over Varul.
Kabbaj earned a 6-2, 6-1 win over Shek on the top court to bring the Aztecs within one. Olmos then clinched the victory, defeating Fantousis 6-3, 6-4 on court five.
Next up, the Aztecs return to The Mesa to take on Utah State on April 11 and New Mexico on the 13th. Both matches are scheduled for a noon start time.
