SAN DIEGO – San Diego State’s Omar Serrano was named Mountain West Pitcher of the Week after tossing a complete-game shutout on April 19 to punctuate the Aztecs’ weekend sweep at San José State. The announcement was made Monday at the league office in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
With his award, Serrano garnered the second conference weekly accolade of his career and gives the Aztecs two honorees this season after Daniel Arambula was tabbed MW Freshman of the Week on March 17.
Against the Spartans, Serrano pitched his third career complete game and first in shutout fashion. The SDSU right-hander scattered four hits, all of which were singles, and offset a walk with six strikeouts, as the Scarlet and Black recorded a 2-0 whitewash.
A native of Downey, California, Serrano allowed just three runners to reach second base and did not issue his lone walk until the eighth inning. In addition, the Aztec senior did not yield a hit with runners aboard (0-12) and gave up just one hit in 10 at-bats with two outs. (.100).
Thanks in part to Serrano’s efforts, San Diego State completed its second conference sweep of the season and recorded its first three-game sweep of SJSU since 2021. In addition, the Aztecs have captured 14 of 18 series against the Spartans since the 2014 campaign, including two this year.
For the season, Serrano owns a 4-4 record with a 6.98 ERA and 50 strikeouts, the latter of which ranks fifth in the Mountain West. He has emerged victorious in each of his last two starts, posting a 1.12 ERA with eight strikeouts against only two walks.
SDSU (14-26, 10-8 MW) has forged a three-way tie for second place in the Mountain West with Nevada and New Mexico, two games behind front-runner Fresno State.
San Diego State will be back in action tonight when it makes the short drive down Interstate 8 to face the University of San Diego at Fowler Park. The Aztecs will then return to Tony Gwynn Stadium on Tuesday to host Cal State Fullerton. Both games are set to begin at 6 p.m. PT.
