SAN DIEGO – San Diego State women’s tennis picked up its sixth straight win on Friday, taking down Utah State 4-1 at the Aztec Tennis Center.
The Aztecs improve to 14-6 overall and 7-1 in the Mountain West while the Aggies fall to 5-13 on the season and 0-8 in the league.
The Scarlet and Black captured the doubles point for the fifth consecutive match. Yasmine Kabbaj and Gloria Alogo paired up for the first time this season and secured a 6-1 win over Utah State’s Niyati Kukreti and Kylee Sperry on court two. Playing on the third court, Zoe Olmos and Charlotte Roesch were bested 6-1 by Natalie Paterova and Maria Paula Ramos Garcia. Liisa Varul and Jo-Yee Chan then clinched the point for the Aztecs, taking court one 6-3 over Indya Nespor and Cielo Tapia-Cruz in the duo’s fourth conference win of the season.
Chan carried the momentum into singles competition, getting off the court first. Playing in the second spot, the junior defeated Kukreti 6-4, 6-3.
The Aggies got on the board with a win on the bottom court where San Diego State’s Roesch fell 6-2, 6-1 to Garcia.
Kabbaj added another for the Aztecs, winning the top court matchup against Nespor in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. It’s the Mountain West Player of the Week’s fourth straight win in the No. 1 spot.
Freshman Liisa Varul was the clincher, securing the team’s seventh conference victory with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Sperry on court five.
Next up, the Aztecs welcome New Mexico for a Sunday matchup beginning at noon.
