COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – For the second time this season, San Diego State softball has the Mountain West Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. Cali Decker earned the award this week for her performance in the Aztecs’ conference-opening series win at Utah State.
San Diego State (17-10, 2-1) played well against the Aggies. On Friday, SDSU picked up a 13-8 win in the opening game of the weekend. The Aztecs led 7-4 in the second game before it was suspended due to lack of light and resumed on Sunday morning as San Diego State held on for an 8-6 victory. In the series finale, SDSU rallied from down 4-1 in the seventh inning to tie the game, but the Aggies ended up winning on a walk-off home run in the bottom of the frame.
Decker started all three games at catcher for San Diego State. The senior came through in the series opener, going 2-for-4 with a go-ahead RBI double, a go-ahead three-run home run, an additional run scored and a walk while recording five putouts defensively. In the second game, she launched a go-ahead solo homer and walked twice, scoring once more. Decker closed out the weekend with two more doubles in the final game of the weekend. Her weekend numbers included a .455 batting average, a .571 on-base percentage, a 1.273 slugging percentage and a 1.844 OPS. This is Decker’s first time winning a Mountain West weekly award and she is the fourth Aztec to do so this season, joining Lala Macario (Player), Cece Cellura (Pitcher) and Dee Dee Hernandez (Pitcher).
San Diego State hosts four games at SDSU Softball Stadium this week. On Wednesday night, the Aztecs will play crosstown opponent San Diego at 6 p.m. This weekend, SDSU will face the New Mexico Lobos in a three-game series. The games are scheduled to start at 6 p.m. on Friday, 4 p.m. on Saturday and 12 p.m. on Sunday. All four games will be broadcast on the Mountain West Network.
