SAN DIEGO – San Diego State women’s tennis got back in the win column on Sunday, taking down Hawai’i 4-2 at the Aztec Tennis Center.
The Aztecs advance to 5-4 overall with a 4-2 record at home while the Rainbow Warriors fall to 4-3.
Hawai’i got on the board first after capturing the doubles point with wins on courts one and two. Yasmine Kabbaj and Ninon Martinache were bested 6-4 by Ana Vilcek and Nikola Homolkova on court two. Sheena Masuda and Peppi Ramstedt clinched the point with a 6-4 victory over Gloria Alogo and Liisa Varul in the top spot. Court three was left unfinished with Hannah Galindo and Makeilah Nepomuceno leading Zoe Olmos and Jo-Yee Chan 6-5.
The Aztecs were able to rally from behind with a strong showing in singles play. On the bottom court, Vesa Gjinaj earned SDSU’s first point with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Nepomuceno. Chan then gave the Aztecs the advantage after taking down Vilcek 6-2, 6-4 on court two. Kabbaj extended the lead to 3-1, taking the top court 6-2, 6-3 over Ramstedt.
Homolkova added a point for Hawai’i with a 6-3, 7-6 (5) win in the court three matchup against Alogo.
Freshman Liisa Varul was the clincher for the Aztecs, earning the fourth point after taking down Masuda 6-3, 5-7, 6-0on the fifth court .
Court four went unfinished with Olmos leading Emma Forgac 7-5, 6-6 (6-3).
Next up, San Diego State will host UCLA on March 1 at noon.
