SAN DIEGO – San Diego State women’s tennis came up just short against No. 26 ranked Washington at the Aztec Tennis Center on Saturday, falling 4-3.
The Aztecs fought hard, but couldn’t overcome the Huskies in a match that came down to the wire. Washington captured the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. Alexia Jacobs and Reece Carter put the Huskies at an advantage with a 6-2 win over Gloria Alogo and Liisa Varul on the top court. Yasmine Kabbaj and Ninon Martinache evened things out with a 6-2 win on court two, taking down Erika Matsuda and Sophie Luescher. McKenna Koenig and Carina Syrtveit put the first point on the board for Washington with a 6-3 victory in their matchup against Zoe Olmos and Jo-Yee Chan on court three.
It was a battle in singles play. Varul tied up the score after defeating Syrtveit 6-3, 6-1 on the sixth court. Kabbaj then gave the Aztecs the lead, rolling to a 6-0, 6-4 win in the top spot matchup against Matsuda.
Carter knotted up the score after defeating Chan 6-4, 6-3 on court two.
After cruising to a 6-2 first set victory, Alogo fought hard to take court three, winning the second set 7-6 (2) over Jacobs.
With the Aztecs up 3-2, the match came down to courts four and five. The Huskies took the first sets in both matches, with Martinache coming up short 7-6 (4) against Koenig and Luescher defeating Olmos 6-2. The two Aztecs bounced back in the second sets, winning 6-4 and 6-2, respectively. Olmos ultimately dropped the third set 7-6 due to a penalty. Koenig clinched the match for the Huskies on court five, earning a 7-5 third set win.
San Diego State will be back in action tomorrow at noon, taking on the Rainbow Warriors of Hawai’i at the Aztec Tennis Center.
