The Aztecs and Pioneers have met ten times dating back to the inaugural San Diego State lacrosse season in 2012. Then-10th-ranked Denver won the most recent matchup in 2024 by a score of 18-8.
Receiving votes in this week’s IWLCA Coaches Poll, Denver is 2-2 on the season with wins over Vanderbilt and Arizona State and losses at Louisville and Ohio State. The Pioneers earned a 21-12 win in their neutral site game against the Sun Devils on Friday, hosted at Aztec Field.
Last season, Denver was 16-4 overall with a perfect 5-0 conference record to take home their fifth straight Big East Championship and earn an NCAA Tournament bid. After a big roster turnover, the Pioneers are led by key returners including senior attacker Lauren Black, senior midfielder Caroline Colimore and senior goalkeeper Emelia Bohi.
The Aztecs are 4-0 to start the 2025 campaign, boasting their best record through the first four games since 2014. Sweeping their two road trips in Michigan and South Carolina, the Aztecs have knocked off Detroit Mercy 17-5, Eastern Michigan 15-10, Winthrop 19-11 and Wofford 24-14.
Last time out, San Diego State took down Wofford in a dominant offensive performance. The Aztecs set a new program record for most goals in a single game, putting up 24. Senior Nikki Seven led the way with a career-high five goals and four assists, as well as two ground balls.
After a second road sweep, three Aztecs earned Big 12 weekly awards. Kate Christos, Reilly Hunter and Keira Doyle-Odenbach were named Midfielder, Defensive Player and Freshman of the Week, respectively. It is the first conference recognition for Hunter and Doyle-Odenbach and the second of the season for Christos. The Aztecs currently lead the Big 12 in weekly awards with six total. Frankie Garcia, Bella Tan and Christos earned attack player, freshman and midfielder honors for the opening week.
Following Sunday’s game, San Diego State will next host USC on March 1 at noon.
