LIHUE, Kaua’i -- The San Diego State men’s golf team shot the second-lowest round of the day to finish in a tie for fifth place at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate on Saturday. The Aztecs, who were 14th out of 17 teams after Thursday’s first round and 10th heading into today, carded a 10-under-par 270 to finish at 3-under 837 for the tournament at the par-70, 7,098-yard Ocean Course at Hokuala in Lihue, Kaua‘i, Hawaii.
SDSU, which was 20th in the latest NCAA golf computer rankings, tied with No. 10 Illinois and No. 26 Texas A&M for fifth at 3-under. No. 16 Utah and No. 41 UNLV were the co-champions at -22, while Santa Clara (-10) and No. 39 Long Beach State (-5) rounded out the top 5.
Senior Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) fired a 5-under 65 on Saturday to finish in a tie for eighth place out of 101 golfers at 4-under 206. Hastings sank six birdies on the day and finished with just one bogey, which came on the par-4, 436-yard third hole. He opened with a 74 on Thursday but bounced back with a 67 on Friday and the 65 today.
Freshman Harry Takis (Brisbane, Australia) tied for 14th at 3-under 207 following a 3-under 67 today. Takis birdies four holes and had just one bogey for the best finish of his young collegiate career.
Senior Shea Lague (Jamul, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) shot an even-par 70 and tied for 38th overall at +3. Lague logged three birdies, one bogey and a double bogey on the par-4, 500-yard fourth hole.
After opening with a 7-over 77 on Thursday, junior Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) shot his second consecutive under-par round with a 2-under 68 to finish in a tie for 45th at +4. The highlight of Saturday’s final round for Chokprajakchat was an eagle hole out on the par-4, 443-yard 11th hole. He also had four birdies, one bogey and a triple bogey (par-4, 430-yard 18th).
Junior Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy) tied for 58th at +7 after shooting a 74 in today’s final round.
UNLV’s Zach Little and Utah’s Gabriel Palacios shared medalist honors at -11.
San Diego State next plays in the Southern Highlands Collegiate in Las Vegas from March 2-4 before hosting its lone home tournament, the San Diego Lamkin Invitational, March 10-11, at San Diego Country Club in nearby Chula Vista, California.
