LIHUE, Kaua’i -- The San Diego State men’s golf team carded a 7-under-par 273 Friday to move up four places into 10th on the second day of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate at the par-70, 7,098-yard Ocean Course at Hokuala in Lihue, Kaua‘i, Hawaii.
After a 14-over 294 in Thursday’s opening round, the Aztecs, who entered the tournament 20th in the latest NCAA golf computer rankings, were 21 shots better today and are 10th out of 17 teams at 7-over 567. No. 16 Utah leads at -15, while No. 39 Long Beach State (-9), No. 41 UNLV (-8), Santa Clara (-7) and No. 21 Brigham Young (E) round out the top 5.
Freshman Harry Takis (Brisbane, Australia) leads the way for SDSU through 36 holes at even-par 140, which is tied for 24th out of 101 golfers. Takis carded a 1-under 69 today with four birdies and three bogeys.
Senior Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) fired a 3-under 67 in today’s second round and is tied for 29th at +1. Hastings eagled the par-5, 571-yard 10th hole, and added four birdies, a bogey and a double bogey.
Senior Shea Lague (Jamul, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) and junior Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy) are tied for 44th at +3 after under-par rounds. Lague shot a 2-under 68 on Friday, sinking six birdies, offset by two bogeys and a double bogey on the par-3, 173-yard 17th. Kowack, meanwhile, signed for a 1-under 69 with four birdies and three bogeys.
Junior Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) was eight shots better in Friday’s second round with a 1-under 69 and moved into a tie for 65th at +6. Chokprajakchat’s up-and-down round featured seven birdies, four bogeys and a double bogey.
San Diego State wraps up its play in the John A. Burns Intercollegiate on Saturday, teeing off at 9 a.m. HT (11 a.m. PT) on the ninth and 10th holes with No. 52 Grand Canyon, No. 57 California and New Mexico.
