SAN DIEGO – San Diego State women’s tennis picked up its fourth win of the season on Friday, knocking off Utah 4-1 at the Aztec Tennis Center.
The Scarlet and Black earned the doubles point with wins on courts one and two. Gloria Alogo and Liisa Varul took down Emma Valletta and Kaila Barksdale 6-3 on the top court. Yasmine Kabbaj and Ninon Martinache clinched with a 6-4 win over Emma Kamper and Hayley Roberts on court two. Zoe Olmos and Jo-Yee Chan were blanked 6-0 by Samantha Horwood and Dylan Lolofie on court three.
“It was a hard-fought doubles point,” said Head Coach Peter Mattera. “The doubles point always proves to be very important. This one came down to the wire and I’m happy that we were able to capture it. Gloria [Alogo] and Liisa [Varul] are doing a great job in the top spot, their skills blend very well together.”
Varul was the first to put a point on the board in singles, taking her match against Samantha Horwood by a score of 6-3, 6-3 on the bottom court. Martinache advanced the score to 3-0 for the Aztecs, defeating in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.
Kaila Barksdale picked up the solo win for the Utes. Chan came up short in the court two matchup, falling 6-3, 6-3.
Alogo was the clincher for San Diego State. After dropping the first set 6-3 to Emma Valletta, the junior bounced back to take the second and third sets 6-3, 6-2 to capture the victory for the Aztecs.
Two matches were left unfinished. The court one battle was called with Utah’s Emma Kamper leading Kabbaj 7-6 (6), 5-6. Olmos was nearing a victory on court five, leading Emma Roberts 5-7, 6-1, 5-1.
The Aztecs advance to 4-2 on the season and look ahead to a road match at Long Beach State at noon on Sunday.
