SAN DIEGO – San Diego State women’s tennis is set for two more matches this weekend, hosting Utah at the Aztec Tennis Center at 2 p.m. on Friday before heading to Long Beach State for a noon match on Sunday.
The Aztecs currently hold a 3-2 overall record with wins over Point Loma, Grand Canyon and Denver. Their two losses came against Oklahoma and Baylor, currently ranked No. 3 and No. 22 in the nation, respectively.
Utah enters the match 5-2 on the season and on a three-match winning streak. The Utes most recently earned a 4-2 win over Memphis on Tuesday. This will be the ninth time the Utes and the Aztecs face off. San Diego State leads the series 5-3, but Utah took the last match 4-3 in April of 2011.
Long Beach State has a 1-2 record with a win over Seattle and losses to Oregon and UC San Diego. The Beach will host CSUN on Saturday prior to Sunday’s matchup.
Long Beach State is a familiar foe. There have been 24 meetings between the programs since 1995. Long Beach State holds a 15-9 advantage in the series, but the Aztecs have won three-straight, including a 7-0 sweep on February 16 of last season.
Last time out, the Aztecs knocked off Denver 4-2 with a strong showing in singles on their home courts. Jo-Yee Chan clinched the match for the Aztecs with a 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 win on court two. The reigning Mountain West Player of the Year, Yasmine Kabbaj, made her first appearance of the season last weekend, taking the top court for San Diego State in both singles and doubles. She took down Denver’s Andrea Burguete Beltran 6-4, 6-0 to help lead the victory over the Pioneers.
