SAN DIEGO – San Diego State women’s tennis hosted Denver at the Aztec Tennis Center on Sunday, picking up a hard-fought 4-2 win over the Pioneers.
Denver got on the board first, taking the doubles point in a tight contest on court one. Louise Wikander and Claudia Martinez de Velasco bested Vesa Gjinaj and Charlotte Roesch on the second court. Zoe Olmos and Jo-Yee Chan tied it up, taking court three 6-3 over Hana Bečirovič Novak and Natálie Cinková. Coming down to a top court battle between Andrea Burguete Beltran/Marley Lambert and Yasmine Kabbaj/Ninon Martinache, the Pioneers were able to secure the doubles point with a 7-6 victory.
The Aztecs picked up momentum in singles play. Gjinaj was the first to get off the court, rolling to a 6-3, 6-0 win over Novak on court five.
Tied at 1-1, the Pioneers responded with a win on the bottom court. Cinková took the first set 6-0 over Roesch. The freshman battled in the second set, but came up short 7-6.
San Diego State was able to rally from behind, winning three straight courts to clinch the match. Kabbaj earned her first win of the 2025 season, taking court one 6-4, 6-0 over Beltran. After cruising through 6-1 in the first set, Olmos dropped the second 6-3 to Martinez de Velasco. The senior fought for the much-needed win, taking the third set 6-3 on court four.
Chan was the clincher for the Aztecs. Wikander claimed the first set 6-2, but Chan bounced back for close victories in the second and third sets 6-4, 7-5.
Martinache’s matchup against Lambert was left unfinished with Lambert leading 6-1, 5-7, 3-2 when the match was called.
San Diego State advances to 3-2 on the season. Next up, the Aztecs will host Utah on Feb. 14 at 2 p.m. PT.
