Aztecs Fall 4-1 to No. 22 Arizona State on Friday

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State men's tennis team hosted the first day of the San Diego Spring Invitational at the Aztec Tennis Center on Friday. Winners of six of their past seven matches, the Aztecs faced the No. 22-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils. SDSU dropped the doubles point and won just one singles match in a 4-1 defeat.
 
The Scarlet and Black fall to 8-3 while the Sun Devils improve to 11-5.
 
In doubles, Robin Parts played with Alexander Mandma (6-0). Facing No. 34-ranked Bor Artnak and Max McKennon, the pair was even at four games when the doubles point was decided. Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice played with Bora Sengul (5-2) on the third court and battled Nicola Cigna and Daniel Phillips. The Aztecs were bested 6-1. Chikaya Sato and Johannes Seeman (6-5) faced off against Murphy Cassone and Jacob Bullard on court No. 2. The Aztecs were defeated 6-2 as Arizona State won the doubles point.
 
In singles, Mandma (6-2) played Phillips on the sixth court. After winning the first set 6-4, he took the second with ease, 6-2, to get San Diego State on the board.
 
Facing McKennon on the second court, Sengul (3-4) fell in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.
 
On the top court, Seeman (3-5) faced No. 74-ranked Artnak. He came up just short in a 7-5 first set defeat and was dropped 6-4 in the second.
 
Chikaya Sato (4-5) faced Bullard on the third court. He sent the first set to a tiebreaker but could not come through with a win, falling 7-6 (7-4). He also was tripped up 6-4 in the second set as Arizona State clinched a win.
 
Two matches went unfinished. Gonzalez Fitzmaurice (6-2) went up against Cigna on court No. 4. He took the first set 6-3 and the second was even at six when the Sun Devils clinched a victory. Parts (6-0) played Roi Ginat on court No. 5. The Aztec took the first set 6-1 but failed to close out his opponent in the second as he was dropped 7-5. He trailed 1-0 in the deciding third set when the match concluded.
 
In tomorrow's San Diego Spring Invitational action, San Diego State will face Tulane at noon PT at the Aztec Tennis Center.
