SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State men's tennis team returned to the Aztec Tennis Center to face the Idaho Vandals on Friday morning. The Aztecs won the doubles point and three of the first four singles matches to clinch 4-1 before finishing with a 4-3 victory.
 
The Scarlet and Black improve to 3-1 including a 3-0 record at the Aztec Tennis Center while the Vandals fall to 0-3.
 
In doubles, Chikaya Sato and Johannes Seeman played against Mario Duron Garza and Alejandro Salvador Civera on the second court. They won a close match 7-5. Estonians Alexander Mandma and Robin Parts played on the top court against Sebastian Medica and Alex Asenov. The match went to a tiebreaker with the Aztecs hanging on to win 7-6 (8-6). On the third court, Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice and Bora Sengul trailed Matteo Masala and Yu-Shun Lai 6-5 when SDSU clinched the doubles point. The Aztecs have won the doubles point in every match so far this season.
 
In singles, Parts played on court No. 6 against Asenov. He cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win.
 
Sengul faced Lai on the third court. He came out on top 6-3 in the first set before blanking the Vandal 6-0 in the second to win.
 
At the top of the lineup, Seeman dropped the first set 6-4 to Medica. He put up a fight in the second but fell 7-5.
 
On the fourth court, Gonzalez Fitzmaurice went up against Duron Garza. He took the first set 6-2 but lost the second by the same score. Gonzalez Fitzmaurice closed him out with a dominant 6-0 third set to clinch an Aztec win.
 
In his match, Mandma dropped the first set to Salvador Civera 6-3 on the fifth court. He bounced back to take the second 6-2 and force a deciding third set. Mandma, however, ran out of steam, falling 6-0.
 
Playing on court No. 2, Sato played Sakagawa. He came up just shy in the first set, 7-5. He stormed back by taking the second set 6-1. In his third set tiebreaker, he was bested 10-4.
 
Next up, San Diego State is scheduled to host a doubleheader on Wednesday, February 21, when it plays UC Riverside at 2 p.m. and Point Loma Nazarene at 5 p.m.
