COLORADO Springs, Colo. – San Diego State’s Nat Martinez won her second consecutive Mountain West Freshman of the Week award, the conference office announced Monday afternoon. Martinez helped the Aztecs go 2-1 in the Cancun Challenge and scored a career-high 22 points in SDSU’s win vs. Wisconsin.
Across three games, Martinez averaged 10.3 points in just 16.7 minutes per game. She was 50% from the field (7-14), 55% from three (6-11) and 85% from the free throw line (11-13).
Against Wisconsin, SDSU trailed the Badgers by five points with 3:43 left. Martinez scored eight points in a span of 1:16 to help the Aztecs retake the lead. In the game, she was 4-for-6 from three and 8-for-10 from the line.
Martinez became the first Aztec true freshman to score 20 or more points in a game since March 11, 2019 (Sophia Ramos vs. New Mexico).
In SDSU’s win over VCU, Martinez had six points and then against Providence she scored three points before leaving the game in the second quarter with an injury.
Martinez is the second Aztec to ever win back-to-back Mountain West Freshman of the Week awards (Asia Avinger in 2021-22).
The Aztecs (8-1) host Bethesda Friday at 11 a.m. for their Field Trip game.
