BOISE, IDAHO – The San Diego State women’s soccer team played at Boise State on Sunday, hoping to bounce back from Thursday’s defeat at No. 12 Utah State. SDSU was unable to score in a defensive struggle, falling 2-0 at Boas Soccer Complex.

Both offenses got off to slow starts as neither team took a shot in the first ten minutes. In the 11th minute, SDSU had a free kick which was taken by the Broncos’ Carly Cross, who sprinted down the field and scored to get Boise State (10-2-1, 3-0-1 MW) on the board. Three minutes later, the Broncos were given the first of their four first-half yellow cards when Kayla Soderstrom was booked. In the 16th minute, Emma Gaines-Ramos had a shot on goal, forcing a save by Boise State keeper Genevieve Crenshaw. A few minutes after that, Bronco associate head coach Max Weber picked up a yellow card of his own for dissent. Alexa Madueno made her first save of the match in the 22nd minute on a shot by Desiree Foster. Broncos Jasmine Young and Michaela Justiniani each were given yellow cards in an otherwise quiet rest of the first 45.

Less than two minutes into the second half, Trinity Coker was assessed a yellow card, the first of the day for SDSU (4-7-1, 2-2 MW). In the 69th minute, Alexa Madueno picked up her second save on a shot by Cross to the center of the net. Three minutes later, Madueno saved a shot by Morgan Padour, setting up a corner kick. After Madueno saved a shot by Sophie Drown off the corner, Padour had the rebound and putback goal to extend the Bronco lead to 2-0.

Madueno made one more save on a Drown shot a few minutes later. Gaines-Ramos had a nice shot in the 79th minute, her second shot on goal of the match, but Crenshaw was able to save it to keep her sheet clean. Madueno had one last save on a Cross shot in the 85th minute and the match finished 2-0 in favor of the Broncos.

San Diego State finished the match with more saves (5-2) and Boise State had more shots (12-5) and shots on goal (8-2) while each team had four corner kicks.

Madueno tallied five saves to increase the program record to 371. She will keep looking to tie the program shutouts record in the Aztecs’ next match. Madueno’s 25 shutouts trail Melanie Vaughn (25.5) and Aubree Southwick (26).

San Diego State wraps up its road trip next week in Colorado with matches at Colorado College on Thursday and Air Force on Sunday.
