ARLINGTON, Texas – San Diego State’s Djibril Doumbia was named the WAC Goalkeeper of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday afternoon. Doumbia helped the Aztecs record shutouts in both of SDSU’s matches last week.
The Aztecs played UTRGV to a 0-0 draw on the road and then won at Grand Canyon 1-0. Doumbia and the Aztecs now have shutouts in three straight matches and in five of their last seven.
In conference play Doumbia leads the WAC in goals allowed average (0.29), shutout percentage (71%) and save percentage (90%).
This is Doumbia’s first weekly WAC award and SDSU’s fourth overall. Robbie Matei has won WAC Offensive Player of the Week twice and Beto Apolinar has won WAC Defensive Player of the Week once.
The Aztecs are 6-0-1 and in first place in the WAC. They can clinch the No. 1 seed in the WAC Tournament and a share of the regular season championship with a win vs. Utah Valley Thursday. They could also clinch with a draw coupled with a Seattle draw or loss, or with a loss if Seattle also loses.
