Three Aztecs Shine at Swedish Swimming Championships

Current San Diego State student-athletes Wilma Johansson and Moa Bergdahl recently competed at the Swedish Swimming Championships (Svenska Mästerskapen) along with former Aztec standout Klara Thormalm, as the trio combined for 15 medals in the long course meet, held July 3-7 at Tinnerbäcksbadet in Linnköping, Sweden.

SAN DIEGO – Current San Diego State student-athletes Wilma Johansson and Moa Bergdahl recently competed at the Swedish Swimming Championships (Svenska Mästerskapen) along with former Aztec standout Klara Thormalm, as the trio combined for 15 medals in the long course meet, held July 3-7 at Tinnerbäcksbadet in Linnköping, Sweden.

Johansson captured an individual gold medal in the 200 butterfly after a victorious effort of 2:17.34, clocking in 4.11 seconds under her seed time. The SDSU fifth-year senior took home an additional pair of bronze medals in the 50 fly (27.34) and 100 fly (1:01.22).

Representing the Jönköpings Simsällskap club program, Johansson also joined forces with former SDSU teammate Thormalm on a trio of triumphant relay squads, including the 4x100 mixed freestyle (3:37.01), the 4x100 medley (4:10.54) and 4x100 freestyle (3:52.22). Thormalm swam anchor behind Johansson in the first two events, while the same duo led off the first two spots, respectively, in the latter race.

In addition, Thormalm led off the Jönköping 4x100 mixed medley relay team that took home a silver medal after finishing at 3:58.19, while Johansson was also the lead swimmer on the 4x200 freestyle relay team that garnered a silver as well with a time of 8:33.56.

Meanwhile, Bergdahl medaled in a pair of individual races, capturing a silver in the 100 breaststroke with a clocking of 1:08.98 before earning a bronze in the 200 breast with a time of 2:32.84. She also finished fourth in the 50 breast after touching the wall at 32.15.

Competing for Simklubben Laxen, Bergdahl additionally claimed medals in a pair of relay events, as her 4x100 freestyle team won a silver after finishing at 3:55.93, while her 4x100 medley took home a bronze with a time of 4:17.69.

The San Diego State swim and dive program is coming off another banner season in 2023-24, winning its third straight Mountain West championship and fifth in the last six years.

Individually, Johansson earned all-Mountain West honors at the conference meet in the 200 fly, 200 free, 500 free and 800 free relay, while Bergdahl was the MW champion in the 100 breast and received all-league recognition in the 200 breast, 200 individual medley and 400 medley relay.

Previously, Thormalm garnered six All-America accolades from the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) during her illustrious Aztec career and was named Mountain West Swimmer of the Year in three straight seasons from 2020-22.
