SAN DIEGO – The No. 60-ranked San Diego State women's tennis team played at the Aztec Tennis Center for the final time this season on Sunday. The team honored seniors Myah Petchey, Andjela Skrobonja and Andreea Velcea before its match against Fresno State. The Aztecs had to default on a court in both singles and doubles since they only had five active players due to an injury to Gloria Alogo. Despite the defaults, SDSU won the doubles point and three singles matches in a 4-1 win.
The Scarlet and Black win their sixth straight match and improve to 13-5 and 7-1 in conference play and drop the Bulldogs to 9-12 and 3-4 in Mountain West matches. The Aztecs' 7-1 conference record ties them with New Mexico for first place in the Mountain West. SDSU has the tiebreaker since it beat the Lobos 4-3 when the teams met in Albuquerque, N.M., this season.
In doubles, SDSU defaulted on the third doubles court with Alogo out. Andreea Velcea and Andjela Skrobonja (11-3) paired up on the second court. Facing Eliza Dunbar and Carolina Piferi, the Aztecs won the first five games on their way to a 6-1 win. On court No. 1, Yasmine Kabbaj and Myah Petchey (8-5) played against Misaki Kobayashi and Matilde Magrini. The set was even at two before the Aztecs pulled away to make it 4-2. The Bulldogs tied things up at four, but Kabbaj and Petchey won the final two sets in a 6-4 victory to take the doubles point.
Colorado State evened the score at one as the Aztecs were forced to default on the sixth court.
Facing Gianna Mastro on the fifth court, Zoe Olmos (8-7) lost just one game over two sets as she earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory.
Velcea (11-4) faced Daria Nazarenko on court No. 4. She also won in straight sets 6-2, 6-3.
No. 84-ranked Skrobonja (14-2) matched up with Mariya Vyshkina on the second court. Skrobonja cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win to clinch an Aztec victory.
Two matches went unfinished. No. 96-ranked Kabbaj (11-2) battled Kobayashi on the top court. The Aztec blanked her opponent in the first set as she won 6-0. She led the second set 5-4 when Skrobonja clinched the match. On the third court, Petchey (8-5) faced Hannah Pieper. Petchey battled her way to a 7-5 win in the first set. She took the first game of the second set and led 1-0 when the Aztecs clinched the win.
San Diego State will play its final match of the regular season at UNLV on Friday, April 19, at 10 a.m. PT.
