SAN DIEGO – The No. 67-ranked San Diego State women's tennis team traveled across town to play the No. 14 San Diego Toreros at the Hogan Tennis Center at noon on Wednesday. The Aztecs were able to win two singles matches but the Toreros won four and took the doubles point as SDSU fell 5-2.
 
The Scarlet and Black lose their second straight match, both against top-40 opponents and drop to 6-4 while the Toreros improve to 7-3.
 
In doubles, Andreea Velcea and Andjela Skrobonja (6-3) played together on the second court. They went up against No. 72-ranked Kailey Evans and Kristina Nordikyan. The Aztecs knocked off their ranked opponents 6-1 to extend their winning streak to six matches. Yasmine Kabbaj and Myah Petchey (2-5) played on the top court against Mia Mack and Elizabeth Goldsmith. The Aztecs were blanked 6-0. Gloria Alogo and Zoe Olmos (2-7) played on the bottom court and faced Jordyn McBride and Claudia De Las Heras for the doubles point. They were bested 6-2.
 
In singles, playing on court two, No. 120 Skrobonja (8-1) faced San Diego's highest ranked player, No. 47 Mack. Skrobonja took the first set 6-3. Mack forced a tiebreaker in the second, but Skrobonja came through with a 7-3 win for her eighth straight victory.
 
Facing Filippa Bruu-Syversen on the bottom court, Olmos (5-5) dropped the first set 6-2. She refused to give in, battling back to take the second 6-4 and the deciding third set 6-3.
 
On the top court, No. 73-ranked Kabbaj (7-2) played against No. 59 De Las Heras. The match was close as the Torero eked by in the first set 7-5. Kabbaj was bested 6-2 in the second set.
 
Playing on the fourth court, Alogo (4-4) played against McBride. She was tripped up 6-4, 6-2.
 
Petchey (4-3) drew Goldsmith on the third court. She put up a fight in the first set, but it was not enough as she was defeated 7-5 before falling 6-1 in the second set.
 
Going up against Abigail Desiatnikov, Velcea (5-4) played on the fifth court. She was dropped in straight sets 6-0, 7-5.
 
San Diego State has some time off before it starts conference play. The Aztecs begin the Mountain West season with two road matches at Utah State on the morning Friday, March 15 and at Boise State in another morning match two days later.
