SAN DIEGO – San Diego State's Colby Turner collected his second straight Mountain West Freshman of the Week award for another set of high-level performances during the period ending March 3, as announced Monday by the league office in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
In four games, Turner led the Aztecs in most offensive categories, including batting average (.500), on-base percentage (.579), slugging percentage (.875), total bases (14), hits (8), runs scored (6) and RBIs (4). Not to be outdone, the SDSU newcomer struck out just once in 16 at-bats during that span.
Turner started the week with a 4-for-5 effort at the plate at UC Riverside on Feb. 27, adding an RBI and two runs scored, though the Aztecs dropped a wild 13-9 decision to the Highlanders.
Turner then tied his career high with four more hits in the Aztecs' 7-1 triumph at Fresno State in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday, setting a collegiate best with three runs scored. In that contest, the SDSU third baseman crafted a 4-for-4 performance at the plate, finishing one triple short of the cycle while driving in three runs, highlighted by his first career homer—a solo shot in the sixth off the scoreboard.
For the season, Turner leads all Aztec regulars with slash line of .395/.460/.674, 17 hits, 10 runs scored and 29 total bases while tying for the top spot with 12 RBIs. He also shares the peak position in the MW with three triples and finds himself among the conference leaders for all games in hits (T-2nd), total bases (T-3rd), RBIs (T-4th), batting average (5th) and slugging percentage (5th).
Monday's accolade gives the Scarlet and Black three straight MW Freshman of the Week honorees to start the season after Turner was also recognized on Feb. 26 and Jake Jackson received the same distinction on Feb. 19.
Turner and his San Diego State teammates will be back in action for a pair of midweek encounters against the San Diego Toreros (March 5) and UC San Diego Tritons (March 6) on back-to-back nights at Tony Gwynn Stadium. Both games are slated for a 6 p.m. PT start.
