SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State women's tennis team will play in its final nonconference match of 2024 on Wednesday, March 6, when it heads west on the I-8 freeway to play at the No. 14-ranked University of San Diego. The match is slated to begin at noon PT.
No. 67-ranked San Diego State (6-3) is 5-1 against schools outside the autonomous five conferences with a 25-7 record in singles in those matches. The Aztecs' top players so far this season have been No. 73-ranked Yasmine Kabbaj (7-1) and No. 120 Andjela Skrobonja (7-1). Kabbaj won her first seven matches of the season on the top court before suffering her first defeat at Washington while Skrobonja dropped her season opener at Pepperdine but has responded by winning seven straight. They have held their own against top competition with a combined 3-2 record against ranked opponents. In doubles, Skrobonja and Andreea Velcea, the two returners from last year's Aztec squad, are 5-0 this season when playing on the second court, their primary position. Those wins are over SDSU's last five matches including a 6-0 win at Washington in the Aztecs' last match.
No. 14 San Diego (6-3) has won three of its last four matches including wins over No. 16 Southern California and No. 24 Arizona State. The Toreros also knocked off No. 2 Texas A&M earlier in the season. San Diego is led by No. 47 Mia Mack and No. 59 Claudia De Las Heras. The Toreros also boast the No. 72-ranked doubles team of Kristina Nordikyan and Kailey Evans. The Aztecs hold a 28-23 advantage in the all-time series between the two schools despite a 6-1 defeat last season at the Aztec Tennis Center.
