Aztecs Defeat Nevada 4-1 on Sunday

SAN DIEGO – The No. 66-ranked San Diego State women's tennis team hosted Nevada on Sunday in its first match at the Aztec Tennis Center in over a month. No. 73 Yasmine Kabbaj returned from her absence and won in doubles with Myah Petchey and Andjela Skrobonja/Andreea Velcea swept their doubles match to clinch the doubles point. Kabbaj, Velcea and Gloria Alogo won in singles en route to a 4-1 Aztecs victory. 
 
The Scarlet and Black improve to 8-5 and 2-1 in conference play and drop the Wolf Pack to 6-7 and 1-3 in Mountain West matches.
 
In doubles, Andreea Velcea and Andjela Skrobonja (7-3) paired up on the second court. Facing Marlene Foerster and Anastasia Luneva, the Aztecs made quick work of their opponents in a 6-0 shutout win. On court No. 1, Yasmine Kabbaj and Myah Petchey (3-5) reunited as Kabbaj reentered the lineup. Against Amahee Charrier and Lea Cakarevic, they won 6-2 to clinch the doubles point. Gloria Alogo and Zoe Olmos (2-7) played on the third court against Kennedy Robinson and Mia Miranda. They trailed 5-3 when the Aztecs won the doubles point.
 
Back in the singles lineup, No. 73-ranked Kabbaj (8-2) battled Foerster on the top court. She was consistent in a 6-3, 6-3 victory.
 
Playing on court four, Alogo (6-4) went up against Luneva. She cruised to a 6-2 win in the first set and faced even less resistance in a 6-1 second to earn the win.
 
Velcea (8-4) faced Cakarevic on court No. 5. Velcea defeated her opponent 6-3 in the first set before taking the second 6-2 to clinch a win for San Diego State.
 
Riding a ten-match winning streak, No. 120-ranked Skrobonja (10-2) returned to her normal spot on the second court and matched up with Charrier. Both sets were close but went in favor of Charrier, as she claimed Nevada's lone point 6-4, 6-4.
 
Two matches went unfinished. Facing Robinson on the bottom court, Olmos (6-6) dropped the first set 6-1. She led 6-5 in the second when the Aztecs clinched a win. On the third court, Petchey (5-4) faced Guerbert. She was bested 6-3 in the first set and trailed 4-3 in the second when the match concluded.
 
San Diego State will remain at the Aztec Tennis Center and host Wyoming at 2 p.m. on Thursday and San Jose State at 12 p.m. on Saturday to wrap up the homestand.
