Aztecs Drop Close Match at Boise State

BOISE, Idaho – The No. 59-ranked San Diego State women's tennis team continued its opening weekend of Mountain West play on Sunday at Boise State. No. 73-ranked Yasmine Kabbaj did not play in the match. After having to default on a court in both singles and doubles due to only having five active players, SDSU won three singles matches but it was not enough in a 4-3 loss to the Broncos.
 
The Scarlet and Black drop to 7-5 and 1-1 in conference play while the Broncos improve to 6-6 and 2-0 in Mountain West matches.
 
In doubles, Andreea Velcea and Andjela Skrobonja (6-3) paired up on the top court. They faced Nicole Discenza and Lorelyz Marruffo. The Aztecs trailed 5-4 when Boise State clinched the doubles point. SDSU had to default on the third court. On court No. 2, Zoe Olmos and Myah Petchey (0-1) played together for the first time. Against Pauline Ernstberger and Shauna Heffernan, they fell 6-2 as Boise State clinched the doubles point.
 
In singles, Boise State took a 2-0 lead as San Diego State defaulted on the sixth court.
 
Velcea (7-4) faced Heffernan on court No. 4. Velcea defeated her opponent 6-3 in the first set before taking the second 7-5 to get the Aztecs on the board.
 
Facing Discenza on the fifth court, Olmos (6-6) dropped the first set 6-4. She bounced back with a 6-3 win in the second set but could not complete the comeback, falling 6-4 in the deciding set.
 
Playing on court three, Gloria Alogo (5-4) went up against Joana Baptista. Alogo dropped the first set 7-6 (7-2) but came all the way back to win by winning the ensuing sets 6-2, 6-4 to keep SDSU's hopes alive.
 
No. 120-ranked Skrobonja (10-1) played on the top court versus Ernstberger. The Aztec held on in the first set tiebreaker 7-6 (7-5). After falling 6-4 in the second, Skrobonja won the third 7-5 to even the match score at three with one match to go.
 
On the second court, Petchey (5-4) faced Marruffo. She took the first set 6-2 but was bested in the second 6-4. The deciding set of the match went to a tiebreaker, but Petchey ran out of steam as Marruffo clinched a Boise State victory with a 7-6 (10-8) win.
 
San Diego State hosts Nevada at the Aztec Tennis Center at noon on Sunday, March 24.
