Aztecs Knock Off Utah State 4-2

LOGAN, Utah – The No. 59-ranked San Diego State women's tennis team began Mountain West play with a road match at Utah State on Friday morning. No. 73-ranked Yasmine Kabbaj did not play in the match. With only five active players, the Aztecs had to default on a court in both singles and doubles, but SDSU was able to win four singles matches for a 4-2 victory.
 
The Scarlet and Black improve to 7-4 and a perfect 1-0 in conference play while the Aggies fall to 3-8 and 0-1 in Mountain West matches.
 
In doubles, SDSU's two returners from last season, Andreea Velcea and Andjela Skrobonja (6-3), paired up on the top court. They faced Laura Fernanda Eugenio de Hilario and Ana Paula Chavez Sanchez. The Aztecs led 4-3 when Utah State clinched the doubles point. SDSU had to default on the third court. On court No. 2, Gloria Alogo and Myah Petchey (0-1) played together for the first time. Against Lisa Kung and Zeynep Naz Ozturk, they fell 6-2 as Utah State clinched the doubles point.
 
In singles, Utah State took a 2-0 lead as San Diego State defaulted on the sixth court.
 
On the second court, Petchey (5-3) faced Kung. She cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 victory to get SDSU on the board.
 
Andreea Velcea (6-4) faced Indya Nespor on court No. 4. Velcea shut out her opponent 6-0 in the first set before taking the second 6-2.
 
No. 120-ranked Skrobonja (9-1) moved up to the top court to play Ozturk. The Aztec was consistent in a 6-3, 6-3 win.
 
Facing Niyati Kukreti on the fifth court, Olmos (6-5) faced little resistance in a 6-1 first set win. It took more effort to close out her opponent, but Olmos got the job done with a 7-5 win in the second to clinch an Aztec victory.
 
Playing on court three, Alogo (4-4) went up against Eugenio de Hilario. Alogo won 7-5 in the first set but fell 6-4 in the second. She was a game away from winning the deciding third set, 5-4, when SDSU triumphed.
 
San Diego State heads to Boise, Idaho, for a road match at Boise State on the morning of Sunday, March 17, at 11 a.m. MT/10 a.m. PT.
