SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State women's tennis team will play in its final home nonconference match of 2024 on Sunday, March 3, when it hosts the Utah Utes at the Aztec Tennis Center. First serve is set for noon PT.
No. 64-ranked San Diego State (6-3) is 6-1 in matches played at the Aztec Tennis Center or a neutral site and has won those matches by a combined 31-9 margin in singles. The Aztecs' top players so far this season have been No. 53-ranked Yasmine Kabbaj (7-1) and No. 106 Andjela Skrobonja (7-1). Kabbaj won her first seven matches of the season on the top court before suffering her first defeat at Washington while Skrobonja dropped her season opener at Pepperdine but has responded by winning seven straight. They have held their own against top competition with a combined 3-2 record against ranked opponents. In doubles, Skrobonja and Andreea Velcea, the two returners from last year's Aztec squad, are 5-0 this season when playing on the second court, their primary position. Those five wins over SDSU's last five matches including a 6-0 win at Washington last Sunday.
No. 41 Utah (7-3) is riding a three-match winning streak. The Utes will also play at UC San Diego on Friday during their time in America's Finest City. Utah is led by the nation's No. 83-ranked singles player, Marcela Lopez. The Aztecs hold a 19-5 advantage in the all-time series against their former conference foe. However, the teams have not met since the Utes left the Mountain West in 2011, with Utah winning 4-3 that season.
