SEATTLE – Coming off yesterday's 5-2 win over Portland, the No. 73-ranked San Diego State women's tennis team was back at Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle on Sunday. This time, the Aztecs battled the host No. 34-ranked Washington Huskies. Washington won the double point and three singles matches to clinch a 4-0 win.
The Scarlet and Black drop to 6-3 while the Huskies improve to 9-3.
In doubles, Andreea Velcea and Andjela Skrobonja (5-3) paired up on the second court. They went up against Erika Matsuda and Sarah-Maude Fortin. The Aztecs shut out the Huskies 6-0, but it was the lone bright spot on the day for SDSU. Yasmine Kabbaj and Myah Petchey (2-4) played on the top court against No. 34-ranked Alexia Jacobs and Astrid Olsen. The Aztecs fell 6-4. Gloria Alogo and Zoe Olmos (2-6) played on the bottom court and faced Catherine Gagnon and Melissa Sakar for the doubles point. The match went to a tiebreaker, but the Huskies emerged victorious 7-6 (7-2).
In singles, Petchey (4-2) drew No. 118 Sakar on the third court. After dropping the first set 6-1, she put up a fight in the second, but it was not enough as she fell 6-3.
On the top court, No. 53-ranked Kabbaj (7-1) played against No. 78 Jacobs. Jacobs was able to win in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 to hand Kabbaj her first singles loss as an Aztec.
Facing Gagnon on the bottom court, Olmos (4-5) struggled to get much going in a 6-1, 6-2 loss as Washington clinched a win.
Three matches went unfinished. Playing on court two, No. 106 Skrobonja (7-1) took the first set 6-2 from Olsen but dropped the second by the same score and trailed 2-0 in the third when the match was decided. Velcea (5-3) faced former Aztec Dariya Detkovskaya on the fifth court. She was bested 6-3 in the first set before winning the second 6-2. Their match was even when Washington clinched. Alogo (4-3) played against Fortin on the fourth court. Alogo was tripped up 6-2 in the first set and trailed 5-1 in the second when the match concluded.
San Diego State has a week to regroup before facing another Pac-12 school, Utah, at the Aztec Tennis Center at noon next Sunday, March 3.
