COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – On Wednesday, the Mountain West Conference announced its weekly awards for tennis and San Diego State's Yasmine Kabbaj was named Mountain West Player of the Week.
Kabbaj's week earned her the 53rd spot in the singles rankings while the team took the No. 75 spot.
This is the fourth week that the conference has handed out the award this season and the first time an Aztec has won. Last season, the Aztecs did not have a player win Player of the Week until March 15, but the team brought home four of the next five weekly honors.
A transfer in her first season on The Mesa after playing at Florida International, Kabbaj (6-0) won all three of her singles matches during the week including two wins over ranked opponents. She took down No. 86 Ana Vilcek 6-2, 6-3, in SDSU's 7-0 win over Hawai'i on Wednesday, defeated Rhona Cook 6-3, 6-3 in a 7-0 victory over Long Beach State on Friday and knocked off No. 14 California's No. 21-ranked Hannah Viller Moeller 4-6, 7-5, 10-4 on Sunday. All three matches were on the top court.
In doubles, she played with Myah Petchey (2-2), also on the first court. The pair beat Hawai'i's Vilcek/Knezkova duo 6-2 and Long Beach State's pairing of Cook/Ramstedt 6-4. They matched up with the nation's No. 15-ranked doubles combo, Mushika/Viller Moeller, against California but came up just short of a victory 6-7 (3-7).
Kabbaj and the Scarlet and Black head to Seattle this weekend to face the Portland Pilots at 1 p.m. on Saturday and No. 34 Washington at noon on Sunday. The Aztecs are 5-0 against teams outside the top 25 so far this season.
