SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State women's tennis team played at the Aztec Tennis Center for the first time in 2024 on Tuesday afternoon, when it hosted UC San Diego. After dropping the doubles point, the Aztecs won five of six singles matches, all in straight sets, en route to a 5-2 victory.
The Scarlet and Black wins its second straight to improve to 2-1 and a perfect 2-0 against unranked opponents while the Tritons drop to 0-4.
On the top two courts, the Aztecs crushed their opposition, winning 6-0, 6-1 on both. On court No. 1, Yasmine Kabbaj defeated Kelly Leung and neared a shutout with a 6-0, 5-0 lead. It was Andjela Skrobonja over Ella Pachl on the second court.
No. 111-ranked Myah Petchey played on the third court against Grace Gamal. It was a tale of two sets as Petchey battled her way to a 7-5 victory in the first set before a 6-0 bagel in the second to clinch San Diego State's win.
Playing on the fourth court, Gloria Alogo matched up with Naomi Nguyen. Alogo was consistent in a 6-2, 6-2 win.
In her match, Andreea Velcea went up against Sophie Pearson. The closest singles match on Tuesday, Velcea won 6-4 in the first set and eked out a 7-5 win in the second to conclude the match.
Zoe Olmos faced Katelyn Vu on court No. 6. Olmos was the lone Aztec to fall in singles, 6-1, 6-3.
In doubles, Petchey and Velcea faced Leung and Polina Jorniak on the second court. The Aztecs fell 6-3. On court No. 3, Alogo and Olmos teamed up against Pearson and Nguyen but were bested 6-1. Kabbaj and Skrobonja led Pachl and Vu 5-4 on the top court when UC San Diego clinched the doubles point.
This weekend, San Diego State will head to Tucson, Ariz., where it will face Arizona at 2 p.m. MT/1 p.m. PT on Friday and Maryland at 12 p.m. MT/11 a.m. PT on Saturday.
