Aztecs Blanked by No. 6 Pepperdine

MALIBU, Calif. – The San Diego State women's tennis team opened its spring season with a match at No. 6-ranked Pepperdine in the ITA Season Kickoff on Friday. The Aztecs won a set and made a few matches close but were shut out 4-0 by the Waves.
 
The Scarlet and Black fall to 0-1 while the Waves improve to 1-0.
 
"The team really fought hard today," Head Coach Peter Mattera said after the match. "Pepperdine is very solid and a tough opener, but we were very excited to get the spring 2024 dual match season started and we are looking forward to getting to play again tomorrow morning against Loyola Marymount."
 
The Aztecs were led by No. 114-ranked Myah Petchey, who took her first set over No. 96-ranked Janice Tjen 6-4. Petchey fell 6-1 in her second set on court three. The match was decided before the two played the third set.
 
Playing on the second court, Andjela Skrobonja had a tough draw in No. 21-ranked Savannah Broadus, Pepperdine's highest ranked player. Skrobonja kept things competitive but ended up dropping both sets, 6-4, 6-3.
 
On court six, Andreea Velcea went up against Jasmine Conway. After she was bested 6-1 in the first set, Velcea battled to keep the second one close but fell 6-3.
 
Zoe Olmos faced Anna Campana on court No. 5. She was defeated in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2.
 
In doubles, Skrobonja and Velcea played on the top court against the nation's No. 4-ranked doubles team in Broadus and Tjen. The Aztecs claimed a game but were dropped 6-1. Olmos and Gloria Alogo were on court No. 3 against Nikki Redelijk and Campana. They fared slightly better but were still bested 6-2. On the second court, Petchey and Yasmine Kabbaj trailed Vivian Yang and Lisa Zaar 5-2 when Pepperdine claimed the doubles point.
 
Two more matches went unfinished. Kabbaj and Zaar battled on the top court. Zaar led 6-4, 4-1 when the match was decided. On court No. 4, No. 77 Redelijk was ahead of Alogo 6-0, 5-3.
 
The ITA Season Kickoff continues tomorrow when San Diego State will take on Loyola Marymount at 10 a.m. The Aztecs return to The Mesa next week for their home opener against UC San Diego at the Aztec Tennis Center at 2 p.m. on January 30.
