ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – On Wednesday, the San Diego State men's tennis team's Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice played for the third straight day in the USTA Pro Futures tournament in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Wednesday was the first day of the Main Draw after Gonzalez Fitzmaurice won consecutive matches to advance out of the Qualifying rounds.

After knocking off back-to-back seeded opponents in Qualifying play while not having a seed himself, Gonzalez Fitzmaurice found himself going up against another seeded opponent in the Main Draw. This time it was the fourth seed, Keegan Smith, a San Diego native who was the NCAA doubles national champion in 2019 and a three-time ITA All-American while playing at UCLA (2018-21).  Gonzalez Fitzmaurice entered on a seven-match win streak going back to April 15 but struggled to get going in a 6-1, 6-2 defeat.

San Diego State is back in action this weekend at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma. SDSU will be represented by Chikaya Sato, Robin Parts and Alexander Mandma in the event starting on Saturday, September 30.
