San Diego State Travels to Colorado State for a Saturday Night Showdown

  • San Diego State hits the road for the next two weeks, beginning with a Saturday night outing at Colorado State.
  • The Aztecs and Rams enter the game with identical records of 3-6 overall and 1-4 in Mountain West play.
  • SDSU plays at San Jose State on Nov. 18 before hosting Fresno State for the battle of The Old Oil Can on Nov. 25 at Snapdragon Stadium.
  • At 3-6, San Diego State is looking to avoid its first losing season since 2009 (the first year of Brady Hoke's first stint as head coach).
  • Prior to the 2010 season, the Aztecs had six consecutive losing campaigns (2004-09) and 11 straight without a winning season (1999-09).
  • SDSU's streak of 13 consecutive seasons with at least a .500 record is tied for the sixth-longest streak nationally (entering 2023) and is the longest streak among Pacific Time Zone teams. In 12 of those 13 seasons, San Diego State posted a winning record.
  • San Diego State is coming off a tough 32-24 loss to Utah State in double overtime on Saturday night in its annual Homecoming Game.
  • The Aztecs rallied from a 10-point fourth quarter deficit with a 10-yard pass from Jalen Mayden to Kenan Christon and a 23-yard chip field goal for Jack Browning with 36 seconds left to force overtime.
  • SDSU made it 17 straight points with a 27-yard pass from Mayden to Brionne Penny in the first overtime, but the Aggies (4-5, 2-3 MW) tied it with a Cooper Legas TD pass to Terrell Vaughn. In the second overtime, Robert Briggs scored on a 20-yard rush and USU converted the 2-point try to take a 32-24 lead. The Aztecs were unable to respond, dropping their second straight game and sixth in their last seven outings.
  • San Diego State fell to 3-3 on the season in one-score games.
  • SDSU was looking to rally from its first 10-point deficit in the second half since 2013.
  • Quarterback Jalen Mayden matched a career high with three touchdown passes and added a season-high 265 passing yards.
  • Kenan Christon had the most catches (8) by a San Diego State running back since 2008, while freshman Lucky Sutton rushed for a career-high 86 yards, including a 62-yard run in the first quarter, the longest by an Aztec since Nov. 14, 2020.
  • Linebacker Cody Moon had a season-high 13 tackles and linebacker Zyrus Fiaseu logged career highs of three sacks and three tackles for loss.
  • It was the first 32-24 score in the SDSU's Division I history (since 1969).
  • San Diego State is playing one of the toughest schedules in the country this season with five games against 10-win teams - vs. Ohio, at Oregon State, vs. Boise State, at Air Force and vs. Fresno State - and eight vs. bowl teams from a year ago - also vs. UCLA, vs. Utah State and at San Jose State.
  • The beginning of the Aztecs' schedule was particularly tough as five of their first six opponents made a bowl in 2022, including games vs. Ohio (10-4) on Aug. 26 (W, 20-13), UCLA (9-4) on Sept. 9 (L, 35-10), at Oregon State (10-3) on Sept. 16 (L, 26-9), vs. Boise State (10-4) on Sept. 22 (L, 34-31) and at Air Force (10-4) on Sept. 30 (L, 49-10).
  • SDSU's eight FBS opponents so far have combined to go 40-33 (.548). When you take away the games vs. San Diego State, those opponents are still 34-31 (.523).
  • Sixteen (16) players have earned their first career Division I start this season for the Aztecs and 19 players overall have made their first start at SDSU.
  • San Diego State has played three of the top-13 defenses in the country this year, including No. 3 Air Force (239.6 yards allowed per game), No. 4 Ohio (264.0) and No. 13 UCLA (294.3). In those games, the Aztecs totaled 227 at Air Force, 318 against Ohio and 259 vs. UCLA.
  • Saturday is the 37th meeting between the schools with SDSU owning a 22-14 advantage. San Diego State has won seven of the last eight games in the series and 10 of the last 12 meetings.
