LOS ANGELES – The San Diego State men's tennis team continued play in the Kramer Collegiate Classic on Saturday. Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice, Alexander Mandma, Robin Parts and Chikaya Sato represented SDSU in the tournament on the USC campus in Los Angeles.
Sato faced UC San Diego's Zachary Pellouchoud in his consolation match. He held on in a tight first set to win 7-5 and claimed the second 6-2 to earn the lone victory of the day for the Aztecs.
Getting a tough draw for a consolation match, Mandma went up against fifth seeded Noah Berry, of Cal Poly. After taking the first set 6-4, he dropped the second by the same score. The tiebreaker was back and forth but Mandma could not pull off the upset, falling 11-9.
In his match, Gonzalez Fitzmaurice drew Oregon's Lachlan Robertson. The reverse of Mandma, Gonzalez Fitzmaurice dropped his first set but came back to win the second and the tiebreaker as he earned a victory by the score of 4-6, 6-3, 10-5.
After winning twice yesterday to advance to the quarterfinals, Parts battled third seeded Karl Kazuma Lee, of host USC. He was bested in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
In doubles, Parts and Mandma teamed up. The top seeded duo in the tournament, they had a bye yesterday. In today's quarterfinals, they faced UCLA's Spencer Johnson and Emon Van Loben Sels. The Aztecs dropped a close match 8-6.
