SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- San Diego State junior Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) tied a school record with a 62 and leads after the first round of the Maui Jim Intercollegiate Friday at the par-71, 7,118-yard Mirabel Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona. Hastings paced an Aztec team that collectively fired a 21-under-par 263, three shots behind Auburn for first place.
Hastings logged nine birdies and nine pars for a 9-under 62. Five of his birdies came in the front nine as he went out in 31. Hastings matched his front nine score with a 31 on the back nine, sinking four birdies. It was the fifth 62 in program history for SDSU, joining Alex Kang (2010 at Alister MacKenzie Invitational), Mark Warman (2003 at U.S. Intercollegiate), Youssef Guezzale (2022 at Maui Jim Intercollegiate) and Dylan Oyama (2023 at Mountain West Championship). His 62 took three strokes off his previous best 18-round score at San Diego State.
Hastings leads the 75-man field, one shot ahead of Auburn's Ryan Eshleman (-8) and two clear of host Georgia State's Daniel Medellin (-7). Aztec junior Shea Lague (Jamul, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) leads a group of six in a tie for fourth at 6-under 65. Lague's 65 came with eight birdies and two bogeys.
Sophomore Tyler Kowack (Del Mar, Calif./La Jolla HS) is tied for 10th following a 5-under 66, while classmate Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) is tied for 32nd at -1 and junior Jack Townsend (San Diego/Charter School of San Diego) is tied for 44th at even-par.
The 263 by SDSU is the third-lowest round in program history and trails only Auburn's 24-under 260 in the 15-team field. Three of San Diego State's lowest four recorded rounds in program history have come at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate. Rounding out the top 5 is SMU (-18), Fresno State (-11) and Oregon (-10).
The Aztecs will tee off from the 10th hole for Saturday's second round at 9:40 a.m. PT.
Three other SDSU golfers, meanwhile, are in the Maui Jim Individual on the par-72 Legend Trail course in Scottsdale. Senior Skyler Ngo (Las Vegas) and freshman Nathan Sampson (Temecula, Calif.) are each tied for 16th at even-par, while junior Rugthai Thongsom (Surat Thani, Thailand) is tied for 33rd at +6. New Mexico's Connor Adams leads the 35-man Maui Jim Individual at -8. The Maui Jim Individual wraps up with 36 holes on Saturday, beginning at 7 a.m. PT.
