TYLER, Texas -- San Diego State quarterback Jalen Mayden (Garland, Texas) has been named to the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch List, as announced Thursday the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce and SPORTyler, Inc.
Honoring the legacy of Pro Football Hall of Fame running back Earl Campbell, the award is presented annually to the nation's top NCAA Division I offensive player who exhibits integrity, performance, teamwork, drive, community and the tenacity to overcome adversity--all enduring characteristics of the former University of Texas and Houston Oilers legendary performer.
To be considered for the award, all nominees must have been born in Texas or graduated from a Texas high school or played at a Texas-based four-year college or junior college.
Last year, Mayden moved from safety to quarterback in October and finished with 2,031 passing yards and 12 touchdowns, going 141-for-237 (59.5 pct.), while owning a 139.7 pass efficiency rating. Mayden, who also rushed for 231 yards with three touchdowns on 69 carries (3.3 avg.), led the Mountain West in yards per completion (14.40, 4th in FBS) and yards per attempt (8.57, 19th in FBS), and ranked second in total offense yards per play (7.39, 29th in FBS) and second in pass efficiency rating (139.70, 48th in FBS), fifth in passing yards (2,030) and passing touchdowns (12), sixth in passing yards per game (156.2) and completion percentage (59.5), and seventh in total offense per game (173.9), despite playing his first five games at safety and on special teams, and only playing eight games at quarterback.
For his efforts, Mayden was the recipient of the John Simcox Memorial Trophy for the most valuable player and the Byron H. Chase Memorial Trophy (offensive player of the year), while garnering honorable-mention all-Mountain West accolades. Mayden has been chosen as a preseason third-team all-MW selection by Athlon Sports.
The watch list announced today will be narrowed to up to 16 semifinalists in November and then up to 5 finalists in Decembers. They will be selected by broadcasters, commentators, journalists, fans and previous winners. The finalists will be brought to Tyler for The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Banquet scheduled for Jan. 10, 2024.
