TUCSON, Ariz. -- The San Diego State men's golf team fired a second straight 16-under 272 to extend its lead to nine strokes after two rounds of the Mountain West Championship Saturday at the par-72, 7,194-yard OMNI Tucson National in Tucson, Arizona. The Aztecs, who are 30th in the latest GolfStat computer rankings, have four players in the top 10 after 36 holes.
SDSU, which led by two strokes over UNLV after yesterday's first round, is at 32-under 544 through two rounds, nine strokes ahead of New Mexico (-23). UNLV is third at 21-under, while No. 23 Colorado State (-19), Wyoming (-14), San Jose State (-14) and Fresno State (-8) are also under par. Others in the field are Boise State (+2), Nevada (+8), Air Force (+8) and Utah State (+20).
Sophomore Shea Lague (Jamul, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) and freshman Dylan Oyama (Carlsbad, Calif./Pacific Ridge HS) are tied for second out of 55 golfers at 9-under 135, while sophomore Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) is a shot back in a tie for sixth at 8-under following an impressive 7-under 65 today. Senior Youssef Guezzale (San Diego/La Jolla HS) is tied for 10th at -6 and freshman Tyler Kowack (Del Mar, Calif./La Jolla HS) is tied for 26th at -1.
Lague carded a 5-under 67 today, overcoming a bogey on the par-5, 535-yard second hole with six birdies and no bogeys the rest of the round. Through two rounds, Lague ranks in a tie for second in par-4 scoring (-4) and in a tie for third in par-3 scoring (-1).
Oyama, meanwhile, opened with three consecutive birdies to start his round and was at 6-under for the day after a birdie on the par-5, 511-yard 10th hole. It was his last birdie of the round, however, as he finished with six pars and two bogeys down the stretch to settle for a 4-under 68. Oyama's 12 birdies are tied for the most in the field through 36 holes. He's also ranked second in par-3 scoring (-2) and tied for second in par-4 scoring (-4)
Hastings fired a 7-under 65, tied with New Mexico's Albert Boneta (also today) for the lowest round of the tournament. Hastings had seven birdies without a bogey and his 65 moved him up 17 places into a tie for sixth after 36 holes. The 65 was a collegiate low for Hastings, who is tied for second in the field in par-4 scoring (-4).
A day after shooting a 6-under 66, Guezzale shot a even-par 72 today with an eagle on the par-5, 610-yard 15th hole and a birdie on the par-4, 430-yard 11th.
Kowack also recorded a 72. He was 3-under for the round through 10 holes with three birdies but followed with three straight bogeys and then five pars to finish.
Colorado State's Christoph Bleier sits along atop the standings at -10, followed by Boneta, Lague, Oyama and UNLV's Caden Fioroni, all at -9.
SDSU tees off its final round at 9:40 a.m. PT Sunday with UNLV and New Mexico.
