SAN DIEGO – San Diego State women's tennis continues its five match homestand this week with matches against Furman on Wednesday at 2 p.m. PT and No. 61 Tulsa on Sunday at noon PT. The Aztecs head into the two matches with a 4-4 overall record.
Last time out the Aztecs fell to No. 37 USD, 6-1. Dariya Detkovskaya earned the singles win for SDSU on court three where she earned a 6-4, 6-1 win to earn a point for the Aztecs. The week prior SDSU earned a 4-0 sweep of Long Beach State. The sweep was SDSU's second of the season, having previously beaten UC San Diego 7-0 earlier in the year. The Aztecs two other wins on the year were over two squads who were ranked in the ITA rankings at the time in No. 40 Alabama, and No. 54 Rice. The 4-3 win over Alabama was head coach Peter Mattera's 400th career win on The Mesa. Including Saturday's match, SDSU has played five of their eight matches against ranked opponents to begin the 2023 dual season.
Furman heads into Wednesday's match owning a 5-9 record overall, having most recently beat Cal State Fullerton on Monday, 6-1. Furman is led by Maddison Dillon who is 8-5 in dual match play to begin the year. Additionally, Sara Snyder has won SOCON women's tennis athlete of the week twice for her performances at the No. 3, 4, and 5 singles slots to begin the season. As for Tulsa, the Hurricanes are 9-5 and ranked 61st nationally according to the latest ITA rankings, having won their two most recent matches over Furman and Alabama. Individually the Hurricanes are led by Laia Conde Monfort and Maria Berlanga who are each 9-3 in dual match play to start the season.
As for the Aztecs, multiple players have started the year strongly. Dariya Detkovskaya enters the match owning a 6-1 record in singles play. She is ranked No. 108 in the ITA singles rankings, and is 5-1 in singles play this year. She also and picked up a win over Snow Han of USC who was ranked 17th in the nation at the time to begin the season. Senior Alicia Melosch has also started strongly, and is 5-3 in singles dual matches to being the year. She picked up the clinching win in the Aztecs 4-3 win over Alabama, a three-set thriller, battling back from a 3-6 first set loss to take the next two 6-3, 7-5 to clinch the win for SDSU.
