SAN DIEGO – The Aztec lacrosse team (3-5) knocked off High Point (1-3) 17-9 Sunday afternoon, their second consecutive win. Eight Aztecs scored and SDSU was led by Caitlin Jones who netted six goals.
"I think it was so fun, you could definitely tell we were just on a high and our communication was off the charts" Jones said after the game. "I think that just leads to such a great outcome where we are all on the same page."
High Point struck first in the first quarter but SDSU quickly responded with a goal of its own from Emma Betts on a free position shot. The scoring continued to go back and forth, going into the second quarter tied at 4-4.
SDSU pulled away with the lead in the third quarter, scoring four consecutive goals to make it 11-7.
The Aztecs added another four goals in the fourth and prevented any scoring from the Panthers to give them a 17-9 victory, their second Snapdragon Stadium win.
Outside of Jones' six goals, Sara Toner tacked on an additional four and Emma Betts contributed two more. Mia Kohn, Cailin Young, Kate Christos, Deanna Balsama, and Brook Waddell each scored once.
"I think that everyone was just really passing and moving together well, and I think most of our goals were assisted too which was awesome," Toner shared. "I think that connection with the passes and moving around a lot got us to the goal and got us to finish."
Goalkeeper Sam Horan had 13 saves.
The Aztecs outshot the Panthers 31-30 and 24-22 in shots on goal. They also had an advantage in draw controls (20-10).
High Point had six players score and was led by Mena Loescher's three. Goalkeeper Taylor Suplee had 2 saves.
