SAN DIEGO – San Diego State women's tennis returns home to begin a five match homestand on Saturday when the Aztecs play host to USD at noon at the Aztec Tennis Center. The Aztecs head into the match 4-3 to begin the 2023 dual season.

Last time out the Aztecs fell at No. 56 Cal, 5-1. The match was initially delayed two hours due to inclement weather in the Berkeley, California area, so only singles matches were played on Friday afternoon. The week prior was a 4-0 sweep of Long Beach State for the Aztecs. The sweep was SDSU's second of the season, having previously beaten UC San Diego 7-0 earlier in the year. The Aztecs two other wins on the year were over two squads who were ranked in the ITA rankings at the time in No. 40 Alabama, and No. 54 Rice. The 4-3 win over Alabama was head coach Peter Mattera's 400th career win on The Mesa. Including Saturday's match, SDSU has played five of their eight matches against ranked opponents to begin the 2023 dual season.

Ranked No. 37 in the country heading into Saturday's match the University of San Diego is 3-5 to start the dual season, but all five losses have come at the hands of teams ranked inside the top 25 in the country. They also boast three individuals ranked in the latest ITA rankings, as well as a doubles team. Solymar Colling headlines the group, and she is ranked No. 57 in the country in singles play. As for doubles Colling and  Elizabeth Goldsmith are the 15th best duo in the country according to the latest ITA rankings, and are 6-4 as a pair to begin the dual season.

As for the Aztecs, multiple players have started the year strongly. Dariya Detkovskaya enters the match owning a 5-1 record in singles play. She is ranked No. 104 in the ITA singles rankings, and is 5-1 in singles play this year. She also and picked up a win over Snow Han of USC who was ranked 17th in the nation at the time to begin the season. Senior Alicia Melosch has also started strongly, and is 5-2 in singles dual matches to being the year. She picked up the clinching win in the Aztecs 4-3 win over Alabama, a three-set thriller, battling back from a 3-6 first set loss to take the next two 6-3, 7-5 to clinch the win for SDSU.
