Skrobonja Tabbed MW Player of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – San Diego State women's tennis' Andjela Skrobonja has been named the Mountain West Player of the Week, the league announced Wednesday. This is Skrobonja's first player of the week honors this season, and the second consecutive week an Aztec has earned the award.

Skrobonja, a transfer from Florida International University, earned the award after helping the Aztecs beat No. 37 Purdue on Friday, 4-3. The Somber, Serbia native went 2-0 on the day, and picked up wins on both court three in doubles and on court one in singles play. In doubles play her and partner Andreea Velcea won their doubles match on court three, 6-4, while in singles play Skrobonja went point for point with Liz Norman on court one. Their battle lasted three sets and over two hours, as Skrobonja dropped the first set 2-6, before coming back in the last two sets. Skrobonja took the second set 6-4 and swung momentum in her favor before completing the comeback, taking the third set 6-3 and earning the Aztecs a valuable point in the match.

Overall, for the 2023 dual season Skrobonja has posted a 5-0 record with doubles partner Velcea since the two of them have been paired together. All five of their wins have been at either the second or third court in the rotation. As for singles play, Skrobonja is 7-4 entering Mountain West play, and is an impressive 6-2 at the No. 1 singles spot, having beat multiple power five opponents to start the year.
 
The Aztecs, who are 7-4 to begin the dual season, have won three straight matches, and four of their previous six. SDSU is currently ranked No. 49 in the latest ITA team rankings and are back in action on Friday morning when they open Mountain West Conference play against New Mexico at 9:30 a.m. PT in Las Vegas, Nevada.
