TUCSON, Ariz. -- The San Diego State men's golf team finished in 11th place at Arizona's National Invitational Tournament Saturday in Tucson, Arizona. The Aztecs shot a 1-over-par 289 in Saturday's final round and collectively finished at 4-under 860 on the par-72, 7,200-yard Omni Tucson National course.
Tournament host Arizona, which is 18th in the latest GolfStat computer rankings, won the team title at 24-under 840, edging out No. 9 Pepperdine (-23), No. 3 Arizona State (-22), No. 4 Illinois (-21) and No. 22 Oklahoma State (-21). USC (-17) came in sixth, while No. 12 Florida (-14), No. 21 Colorado State (-8), No. 13 Oklahoma (-6) and New Mexico (-6) also were ahead of SDSU (-4) in a field that had nine of the 13 teams ranked in the top 27 of the GolfStat ratings.
Sophomore Shea Lague (Jamul, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) was San Diego State's top finisher in a three-way tie for 13th out of 84 golfers at 5-under 211. Lague fired his second straight 2-under 70 in Saturday's final round, opening with two birdies in the first three holes and four through his first 10 (along with two bogeys), before recording pars on the final 10 holes.
Sophomore Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) dropped to a tie for 44th following a 2-over 74 and finishing at even-par 216. Hastings was a 3-under through 10 holes, but bogeyed three straight holes on the back nine (No. 14, No. 15 and No. 16) and double bogeyed the par-4, 469-yard 18th to settle for a disappointing 74.
Freshman Dylan Oyama (Carlsbad, Calif./Pacific Ridge HS), meanwhile, tied for 50th at 1-over 217 after a 1-over 73 on Saturday. Oyama overcame a double-bogey on the par-4, 402-yard first hole with five birdies (and two bogeys) through his first 14 holes, but bogeyed his last two holes for a 73.
Senior Youssef Guezzale (San Diego/La Jolla HS) tied for 59th at +4 with 4-over 76 today, while freshman Tyler Kowack (Del Mar, Calif./La Jolla HS) improved on his 76-74 yesterday with an even-par 72 today to tie for 69th at +6.
USC's Jackson Rivera and Arizona's Zach Pollo each tied for medalist honors at 13-under 203, three shots clear of Pepperdine's William Mouw (-10).
San Diego State will look to win its third consecutive Wyoming Cowboy Classic title April 3-4 at Whirlwind Golf Course in Chandler, Arizona.
