LAS VEGAS -- The San Diego State men's golf finished in a tie for 13th-place at the Southern Highlands Collegiate at 9-over-par 873 after carding a 3-over 291 in Tuesday's final round on the par-72, 7,510-yard Southern Highlands course in Las Vegas.
The Aztecs, who are ranked 25th in the latest GolfStat ratings, dropped two places on the final day into a tie for 13th with New Mexico (+9). No. 7 Illinois shot a 11-under 277 today to take first in the 15-team field at 21-under 843, while No. 16 Texas (-19), No. 14 Pepperdine (-18), No. 4 North Carolina (-16) and No. 9 Oklahoma (-15) rounded out the top 5.
Freshman Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) and sophomore Shea Lague (Jamul, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) each tied for 40th out of 84 golfers to pace SDSU at 2-over 218. Chokprajakchat fired a 2-under 70 for his best round of the tournament, overcoming a back-to-back bogey start on the par-4, 455-yard 10th and the par-4, 500-yard 11th with five birdies over his next 14 holes until a bogey on the par-3, 167-yard eighth.
Lague, meanwhile, came back from consecutive 74s with a 70 in today's final round. Lague sank six birdies on the day, including his final hole on the par-5, 592-yard ninth, where were offset by four bogeys.
Sophomore Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) finished two shots behind in a tie for 50th at 4-over 220 following a 5-over 77 today. The lone birdie for Hastings came on the par-4, 417-yard first hole, while recording four bogeys and a double bogey on the par-3, 214-yard 17th.
Freshman Dylan Oyama (Carlsbad, Calif./Pacific Ridge HS) shot a 2-over 74 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for 59th at +7. Oyama opened with 11 straight pars before double bogeying the par-5, 620-yard third, birdieing the par-4, 440-yard seventh and bogeying No. 8.
Freshman Tyler Kowack (Del Mar, Calif./La Jolla HS) couldn't match his Sunday 1-under 71 as he went 77-81 to close the tournament and tie for 75th at 13-over 229. Kowack notched birdies on No. 3 and the par-3, 177-yard 12th, but had two bogeys, two double bogeys and a devastating 10 on the par-5, 622-yard 18th.
Florida's Yuxin Lin garnered medalist honors at 13-under 203 and earned an exemption into the PGA Shriners Children's Open. Christiaan Maas of Texas was the runner up at -10.
