No. 25 Aztecs in 12th at Southern Highlands Collegiate

LAS VEGAS -- The San Diego State men's golf team shot a 1-over par 289 Sunday and is in 12th place after the first round of the Southern Highlands Collegiate on the par-72, 7,510-yard Southern Highlands course in Las Vegas.
 
Out of the 15 teams in the loaded field, 10 are within five shots of the Aztecs, who are ranked 25th in the latest GolfStat ratings. No. 4 North Carolina fired a 17-under 271 to pace the tournament, followed by No. 14 Pepperdine (-10), No. 16 Texas (-5) and No. 11 Florida (-5). Just ahead of SDSU is No. 7 Illinois (-3), New Mexico (-2), No. 41 TCU (-2), No. 15 Texas A&M (-1), No. 9 Oklahoma (-1), host UNLV (-1) and No. 8 Georgia Tech (E). San Diego State (+1) is leading No. 30 Georgia (+2), SMU (+2) and UCF (+8).
 
Sophomore Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) carded a 4-under 68 to lead the Aztecs, which is tied for eighth out of 84 players. Starting on the 10th hole Hastings was 1-under through 11 holes following a bogey on the par-3, 201-yard second hole, but rallied for three birdies and no bogeys over his final seven holes, including the par-4, 365-yard fifth, par-4, 440-yard seventh and the par5, 592-yard ninth.
 
Freshman Tyler Kowack (Del Mar, Calif./La Jolla HS) shot a 1-under 71 and is tied for 21st. Kowack sank six birdies on the day and have five bogeys.
 
Sophomore Shea Lague (Jamul, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) is tied for 50th at 2-over, while freshmen and Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) and Dylan Oyama (Carlsbad, Calif./Pacific Ridge HS) are tied for 70th (+4) and tied for 73rd (+5), respectively.
 
Three players - North Carolina's Austin Greaser, Florida's Yuxin Lin and Pepperdine's Sam Choi - top the field at 8-under 64.
 
SDSU is schedule to begin its second round at 9:40 a.m. PT Monday.
