Aztec Swim and Dive Earns 59 All-MW Honors

SAN DIEGO – Fresh off its second consecutive conference title and fourth in the last five years, the San Diego State swim and dive program garnered 59 all-Mountain West accolades at the 2023 MW Championships, conducted Feb. 15-18 in Houston, Texas. The announcement was made Thursday by the league office in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

All-Mountain West honors are presented to the top eight finishers in each of the individual swimming and diving events, as well as the competitors on the top-three placing teams in each of the five relay events.The Aztecs' 59 all-MW plaudits marked a conference high.

San Diego State captured 10 individual goal medals and swept all five relay competitions at the MW meet last week, setting a league record with 1,638 points on the team scoreboard en route to their seventh conference crown since 2011.

Following the championships, Wilma Johansson was named MW Swimmer of the Meet, while Moa Bergdahl was tabbed MW Freshman of the Meet.

Johansson took home gold medals in the 200 and 500 freestyle last week while contributing to SDSU's victorious 800 freestyle relay team. In addition, the Aztec junior placed second in the 200 butterfly with a school-record time of 1:57.17.

Bergdahl, meanwhile, received top freshman recognition after collecting a silver medal in the 100 breaststroke to go with top-seven placements in the 200 breaststroke (5th) and 200 individual medley (7th).

In all, the Scarlet and Black boasted nine student-athletes that earned four or more all-Mountain West honors, including Jeannette King and Meredith Smithbaker, who collected six apiece, while Lizzie Menzer, Kristina Murphy and Alex Roberts merited five each.

San Diego State divers are now gearing up for the NCAA Zone E Championships, slated for March 6-8 in Federal Way, Washington. Meanwhile, Aztec swimmers who achieved NCAA "B" cut times eagerly await notice of qualification for the NCAA Championships, set for March 15-18 in Knoxville, Tennessee.
