COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The San Diego State swim and dive program collected two conference awards on Tuesday, as Alex Roberts (Visalia, Calif.) was named Mountain West Swimmer of the Week, while Abby Storm (Denver, Colo.) received Freshman of the Week recognition.
Both swimmers were honored for their key contributions in helping the Aztecs capture the team title at the highly competitive SMU Invitational, Nov. 17-19, in Dallas, Texas.
In addition, the SDSU teammates garnered the first MW weekly accolades of their respective careers and gave the Aztecs five such plaudits already this season.
A native of Visalia, California, Roberts won two event titles with a pair of NCAA B Cut times, including a victory in the A Finals of the 100 backstroke with a career-fast swim of 52.90, which ranks second in program history. The Aztec junior also emerged triumphant in the A Finals of the 200 backstroke with a winning time of 1:55.26. Earlier in the preliminary heats, she recorded a collegiate-best swim of 1:54.91, moving into second place as well on the school's all-time performance list.
Additionally, Roberts contributed to SDSU's point-total after placing fifth in the A Finals of the 200 individual medley with a career-fast clocking of 2:01.39, which ranks ninth in Aztec history. She also swam the butterfly segment of SDSU's 400 medley relay team that finished with a time of 3:40.88. Roberts' weekend featured another victory in the B Finals of 100 fly where she touched the wall with a season-fast 53.90 to place ninth overall.
Meanwhile, Storm advanced to the A Finals in two individual events with season-best times as well, highlighted by a strong second-place effort in the 100 backstroke, where she clocked in at 54.28 to vault into eighth place on the Aztecs' all-time charts.
Storm also finished fourth in the 200 backstroke with a swim of 1:58.82 and contributed to SDSU's point-total by swimming the third leg of the team's 400 freestyle relay that finished 13th at 3:30.68. Additionally, the Denver, Colorado, product competed in the backstroke leg of the Aztecs' third 200 medley relay team that posted the sixth-fastest time of the event at 1:42.00.
Thanks in part to Roberts and Storm's efforts, San Diego State claimed its fourth team crown in 13 regular-season invitational meets since the beginning of the 2017-18 campaign, finishing no lower than third place in each of those events.
San Diego State will be back in action next month when Aztec divers compete in the CBU Lancer Invitational, Dec. 16-17, split between venues in Mission Viejo (platform) and Riverside, California (springboards), on respective days.
