SAN DIEGO – For the second time in as many years, Matt Bradley, a San Diego State senior guard, has been included on the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame's initial watch list for the Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award, the most prestigious individual honor a collegiate shooting guard can earn. The announcement was made from the Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Bradley, one of 20 men's basketball players who have been included on the watch list, transferred to The Mesa from the University of California prior to the 2021-22 season and last year led the Aztecs in points per game (16.9), 3-pointers (57), free throws (113) and minutes (1,007). In addition, he ranked second on the squad in rebounds (174), assists (85), and was third in steals (33). His 542 points are the 15th most in a season in program history.
The native of San Bernardino, California, returns in 2022-23 as the No. 4 scorer and the No. 5 rebounder in the Mountain West. He reached double-figure scoring 26 times last year and in those games the team was 20-6. He enjoyed 19 games of 15 or more points, 12 games of 20 or more, and a career-high 30-point game in a 73-66 victory at Wyoming, the only home loss the Cowboys suffered last season. At the conclusion of the year, he was named a second-team NABC All-District 17 performer, the Mountain West Newcomer of the Year, first-team All-Mountain West, and was included on the Mountain West All-Tournament Team.
A 6-4, 220-pound shooting guard, he has scored 1,831 points in 117 career games and is one of five players in the nation, who still have eligibility and will compete this year, to score at least that many points in the last four seasons.
Fans are encouraged to participate in Fan Voting, presented by Dell Technologies, in each of the three rounds, starting Friday, October 28. In late January, the watch list of 20 players for the 2023 Jerry West Award will be narrowed to 10 and then in late February to just five. In March the five finalists will be presented to West and the Hall of Fame's selection committee where a winner will be selected.
