TURNING THE PAGE
* San Diego State returns to America's Finest City for its third home game in four weeks to start the 2022 season.
* It's just the third time the Aztecs (1-2) will be playing in San Diego County in their last 27 games. Prior to this season, SDSU had played its previous 23 games (two-plus seasons) out of San Diego County, including 12 "home" games at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, some two hours away from the San Diego State campus.
* The Aztecs are 1-2 for the first time since starting 1-3 in the 2015 campaign. SDSU went onto win its final 10 games that season, including all eight Mountain West games, beating Air Force, 27-24, in the MW Championship game and defeating Cincinnati, 42-7, in the Hawai'i Bowl.
* Following that 1-3 start in 2015, San Diego State won 13 consecutive games overall and 19 in a 20-game stretch.
* The Aztecs are 65-23 (.739) since the 1-3 start in 2015, which is tied with Notre Dame for the eighth-best record over that span (since Oct. 3, 2015).
* SDSU has played its last 19 games without having a two-game losing streak. San Diego State's last two-game losing streak came in the COVID-shortened 2020 season when it lost at Nevada, 26-21, on Nov. 21 and to Colorado, 20-10, on Nov. 28 on a five days notice.
* The Aztecs are meeting Toledo (2-1) for the first time.
* SDSU has won six of its last seven games when playing an opponent for the first time in program history (2016 vs. New Hampshire, 2017 vs. UC Davis, 2018 vs. Sacramento State and Eastern Michigan, 2019 New Mexico Bowl vs. Central Michigan and 2021 vs. Towson). San Diego State's lone loss in that stretch was the 2018 Frisco Bowl vs. Ohio.
* The Aztecs and Rockets have been two of the best teams in the FBS over the last seven-plus seasons. SDSU is 66-26 (.717) since 2015 with six bowl appearances, the 12th-best record over that span (min. 70 games as FBS program) (No. 3 Group of 5 record). Toledo, meanwhile, is 56-30 (.651) since 2015 with five bowl trips, the 22nd-best mark over that span (No. 6 Group of 5 record).
* Only two games will be played this weekend featuring the top-25 winningest programs since 2015 (min. 70 games as FBS program): Toledo at San Diego State and Wisconsin at Ohio State.
* The San Diego State and Toledo campuses are a hefty 2,261-mile drive from one another, which would take roughly 34 hours of drive time without stops.
* The two teams are scheduled for a future game at Glass Bowl in Toledo after the 2020 scheduled game there was canceled because of the COVID pandemic.
* The Rockets are the ninth different current member of the Mid-American Conference that the Aztecs will play. SDSU is 14-1-1 against current members of the MAC and 9-1-1 against teams that were in the MAC at the time of the game.
* Ironically, both San Diego State and Toledo are coming off losses to 2021 Rose Bowl opponents on Saturday. The Aztecs lost at No. 14/15 Utah, 35-7, while the Rockets fell at No. 3/3 Ohio State, 77-21. Ohio State edged Utah, 48-45, in last year's Rose Bowl.
* SDSU suffered its second straight loss to a Pac-12 team on Saturday after going 7-2 in its previous nine against the league.
* San Diego State held the Utes scoreless over their first four possessions following a 73-7 Utah win over Southern Utah the previous week, but the Utes scored a touchdown on its next five possessions, including two off Aztec turnovers.
* SDSU lost starting quarterback Braxton Burmeister after just 11 snaps to an eye injury. Playing the first meaningful snaps of his career, true freshman Kyle Crum played the final 44 snaps of the game, throwing an 18-yard touchdown pass to redshirt freshman Josh Nicholson with 3:56 left to escape the shutout.
* San Diego State was outgained for the game by Utah, 398-173.
* Only 11 schools have more wins than SDSU's 13 since last season, including Georgia (17), Alabama (16), Cincinnati (15), Louisiana (15), Michigan (15), Oklahoma State (15), Baylor (14), Coastal Carolina (14), Ohio State (14), Oklahoma (14) and Wake Forest (14). Other 13-win programs besides San Diego State include Clemson, Houston, Kentucky, Michigan State, Ole Miss, Pittsburgh and UTSA.
