SDSU Moves up Seven Places at Maui Intercollegiate

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Senior Youssef Guezzale (San Diego/La Jolla HS) tied a school record with a 62 as the San Diego State men's golf team fired a 19-under-par 261 to move up seven places in the second round of the Maui Jim Intercollegiate Saturday afternoon at the par-70, 7,118-yard Mirabel Golf Club.
 
The Aztecs, who shot a 3-under 277 yesterday, are now in a tie for fifth place at 22-under 538. Auburn leads the 18-team field at 34-under 526, while Arizona State (-32), Florida State (-29), Tennessee (-27), San Diego State (-22) and Oregon (-22) round out the top 6.
 
All five SDSU golfers improved its first-round scores from Friday, led by Guezzale's school-record tying 62. Guezzale eagled the par-5, 571-yard second hole and had seven birdies, including the par-4, 390-yard 12th, the par-4, 466-yard 13th and the par-3, 217-yard 14th, en route to his 8-under 62. Guezzale's lone blemish came with a bogey on the par-4, 526-yard seventh. The 62 tied Alex Kang (2010 at Alister MacKenzie Invitational) and Mark Warman (2003 at U.S. Intercollegiate) for the lowest San Diego State scores in recorded history. Guezzale, who carded a 73 on Friday, is tied for 20th at 5-under 135 heading into tomorrow's final round.
 
Sophomore Shea Lague (Jamul, Calif./Steele Canyon HS), meanwhile, followed up his 66 on Friday with a 6-under 64 today, which is tied for the eighth-lowest recorded round in program history. Lague logged seven birdies, including three over the final four holes, against just one bogey on the par-3, 217-yard 11th. Lague is tied for fifth out of the 90 golfers at 10-under.
 
Sophomore Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) carded a 3-under 67 and is tied for 30th at 4-under 136. Hastings was at even par through 12 holes, but birdied the 13th, the par-5, 561-yard 17th and the par-4, 438-yard 18th to record his lowest collegiate round.
 
Freshman Dylan Oyama (Carlsbad, Calif./Pacific Ridge HS) shot a 2-under 68, one stroke better than Friday, and is tied for 35th at 3-under. Oyama sank three birdies on the day and had just one bogey, which came on the 11th.
 
Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) bounced back from a 4-over 74 with a 1-under 69 today in his first collegiate tournament. He birdied three of the first four holes and had two bogeys the rest of the way for his 69. Chokprajakchat is tied for 73rd at +3.
 
Tennessee's Caleb Surratt is the 36-hole leader at 13-under 127 following a 63 on Saturday. Oregon's Owen Avrit is a shot behind at -12, while Auburn's Ryan Eshelman and Florida State's Cole Anderson are tied for third at -11, and Lague and Wake Forest's Boyd Owens are tied for fifth at -10.
 
The Aztecs will play their final round with Tennessee and Oregon, beginning at 7:50 a.m. PT Sunday.
 
Competing in the Maui Jim Individual at the Desert Mountain, Outlaw Course, freshman Tyler Kowack (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) tied for fourth out of 37 players at 8-under 208, while Jack Townsend (San Diego/Charter School of San Diego) finished 30th at 9-over 225.
