Aztecs in 12th at Maui Jim Intercollegiate

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Sophomore Shea Lague (Jamul, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) fired a 4-under 66 to pace the San Diego State men's golf team in the first round of the Maui Jim Intercollegiate Friday afternoon at the par-70, 7,118-yard Mirabel Golf Club.
 
Sophomore Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) and freshman Dylan Oyama (Carlsbad, Calif./Pacific Ridge HS) added 1-under 69s as the Aztecs are 12th out of a loaded 18-team field after one round.
 
Lague bogeyed the par-4, 456-yard ninth hole to hit the turn at even-par but turned around his round on the back nine. Lague birdied the par-4, 449-yard 10th, eagled the par-4, 390-yard 12th, and birdied both the par-4, 433-yard 15th and par-4, 423-yard 16th to reach 5-under par, but ended his round with a bitter bogey on the par-4, 438-yard 18th to settle for a 66. Lague is in a tie for 13th out of 90 golfers.
 
Hastings, meanwhile, birdied three of the first five holes, including the par-5, 571-yard second, par-4, 472-yard fourth and the par-4, 307-yard fifth. Hastings, however, couldn't get another birdie the rest of the way while recording a pair of bogeys to sign for a 69.
 
Competing in his first career collegiate event, Oyama sank four birdies, including three straight on No. 15, No. 16 and the par-5, 561-yard 17th offset by three bogeys for his matching 69. Hastings and Oyama will start Saturday's second round in a tie for 36th.
 
Youssef Guezzale (San Diego/La Jolla HS) overcame a quadruple bogey on the par-3, 165-yard sixth to post a 3-over 73, which has him tied for 73rd. Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) is tied for 80th following a 4-over 74.
 
Auburn's Ryan Eshleman shot a blistering 10-under 60 and leads Oregon's Owen Avrit (-7) and Wake Forest's Boyd Owens (-7) by three shots after the first round.
 
Auburn is out in front in the team standings at 22-under 258, while Oregon (-12), Tennessee (-11), Washington (-11) and Florida State (-10) round out the top 5.
 
Competing in the Maui Jim Individual at the Desert Mountain, Outlaw Course, freshman Tyler Kowack (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) fired a 7-under 65 and trails Wake Forest's Andrew McLauchlan (-8) by a stroke in the 37-man field. Sophomore Jack Townsend (San Diego/Charter School of San Diego) is tied for 35th at +11.
 
The Aztecs begin their second round at 8 a.m. PT Saturday, teeing off from the first hole.
